George Perkins Marsh is considered by some to be the first American conservationist, publishing “Man and Nature” in 1864. Marsh argued that ancient Mediterranean civilizations collapsed through environmental degradation and that deforestation led to eroded soils that led to decreased soil productivity. This book was instrumental in the creation of Adirondack Park in New York and the United States National Forest. Take some time today to practice the art of taking in your surroundings.
