Stone wall at Chafee NWR Narrow River USFWS

In the past, the area was used for agricultural purposes – there are old stone walls and ditches that were put in the marsh probably in the late 1800s. The ditches were put in to help dry out the marsh for harvesting salt marsh hay. But the ditches get clogged over time, holding water on the marsh that can kill off plants or change them over from high-marsh to low-marsh vegetation. Credit: Steve Droter.
